"That was really the kickoff of our collection. "It was tailor-made for Ocean House," Deborah says. After seeing a series of drawings the magazine had commissioned from the illustrator-"Adieu to the Old Ritz," in our December 1950 issue (below)-on display in the windows of Bergdorf's, the Royces were sold. And just the sort of crowd Bemelmans himself might've relished immortalizing in paper and ink.Īfter falling into a state of disrepair in the early aughts, Ocean House was saved from demolition and brought back to its Gilded Age glory in 2010 by Charles and Deborah Royce, a philanthropic couple from Greenwich with little experience in hotels but great instincts for preservation.Īnd, it turns out, a healthy appetite for Bemelmans, for which T&C might take some credit. Use as an entire unit, or choose pages individually to meet students needs. The aristocratic Victorian-style pile was built in the 1860s in the tony seaside enclave of Watch Hill, Rhode Island, for the sort of old moneyed crowd that uses the word summer as a verb. It's about the writing team of Billy Wilder and Charles Brackett-sardonically called "the happiest couple in Hollywood"-and their raucous professional relationship. Sam Staggs's Close-Up On Sunset Boulevard tells the story of this extravagant work, from the writing, casting and filming to the disastrous previews that made Paramount consider shelving it. One of the most critically admired films of the twentieth century, Sunset Boulevard is also famous as silent star Gloria Swanson's comeback picture. It's also one long in-joke about the movie industry and those who made it great-and who were, in turn, destroyed by it. Billy Wilder's Sunset Boulevard, a classic film noir and also a damning dissection of the Hollywood dream factory, evokes the glamour and ruin of the stars who subsist on that dream. Guralnick's books are generally considered the most authoritative and thoughtful biographies yet written about Elvis Presley. It's been several years since I've read my copy of Guralnick's book, the first in his two-part set that concluded with the recently published Careless Love. This project, according to Schilling, is budgeted at between $20-$30 million dollars, an incredibly low amount for such a lengthy period movie with so many crowded concert scenes and music rights involved. British directors Stephen Frears ( The Grifters) and Mike Newell ( Donnie Brasco) considered directing it at different times but both seem to have now moved on. This project is in development hell over at Fox 2000 with Oscar-winner Steve Tisch ( Forrest Gump) and Elvis' lifelong pal Jerry Schilling producing it. Stax here with my reaction to the screenplay for Last Train to Memphis! This 155-page rough draft by Jim Uhls ( Fight Club) is an adaptation of rock historian Peter Guralnick's acclaimed 1994 biography of Elvis Presley's life from 1935 to 1958. The Straight Mind For Wittig, language relates to a network of powers constantly acting upon, but concealing, the social reality at political stake. Throughout the 2020 election cycle, Benson repeatedly refused to back down from fulfilling the duties of her office, even as threats and harassment from then-President Trump and his allies grew increasingly aggressive. Benson, the state's chief elections officer, did not waver, and defended the will of Michigan voters and assured them that she would protect and defend the integrity of Michigan's vote in accordance with state law. Protesters called Benson a "traitor” and a “criminal” for defending the certification of Michigan's accurate results, which favored Joe Biden. In December 2020, shortly after the presidential election, Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson was at home putting up Christmas decorations with her young son when armed protestors massed in front of her house demanding that Michigan's presidential election result be reversed. His tales never become merely shocking or gruesome. He has the ability to treat the horrible and ghastly with a light touch, sometimes even with a humorous one. Prompted by an interviewer, he turned an account of one of his war experiences into a short story that was accepted by the Saturday Evening Post, which were eventually collected in Over to You (1946).ĭahl's stories are often described as horror tales or fantasies, but neither description does them justice. During World War II he served as a fighter pilot and for a time was stationed in Washington, D.C. He had a relatively uneventful childhood and was educated at Repton School.
